What Is a Ceramic Intalox Saddle Ring? The ceramic Intalox saddle ring is an open-type random packing characterized by a grooved, semi-cylindrical structure. Its shape lies between a ring and a saddle, and it is manufactured through a continuous extrusion process for random dumping inside columns.
The ceramic Intalox saddle ring is derived from the arc saddle, with the curved surface modified into a rectangular profile and differentiated inner and outer radii of curvature. This design essentially eliminates interlocking between packing elements, resulting in a more uniform void distribution and improved gas-liquid flow distribution. A central annular reinforcing rib further prevents nesting and obstruction, enhancing the effective utilization of mass transfer surfaces.
Performance Advantages
High throughput and low pressure drop. The saddle ring packed bed features a relatively large void fraction, with predominantly arc-shaped liquid channels that reduce gas flow resistance and decrease the radial diffusion coefficient of the descending liquid. Compared with Raschig rings of the same size, saddle rings offer higher throughput, lower pressure drop, and greater efficiency. They also exhibit lower resistance and better mechanical strength and rigidity than Pall rings.
Excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance. The ceramic material provides outstanding chemical stability, enabling resistance to various inorganic acids, organic acids, and organic solvents, with the exception of hydrofluoric acid. The maximum operating temperature exceeds 1,100°C, making it suitable for mass transfer and separation processes under high-temperature conditions.
Main Application Areas
Ceramic Intalox saddle rings are widely used in column equipment across the chemical, metallurgical, coal gas, oxygen production, pharmaceutical, and environmental protection industries. Typical applications include drying towers, absorption towers, cooling towers, scrubbing towers, regeneration towers, desulfurization towers, and heat exchangers.
In specific processes, this packing is employed in drying and absorption towers for sulfuric acid production, nitric acid tail gas absorption treatment, and regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) systems for organic waste gas treatment. Its corrosion resistance also makes it suitable for acidic or alkaline extraction systems.
With its well-designed geometry, favorable mass transfer performance, and outstanding resistance to corrosion and high temperatures, the ceramic Intalox saddle ring maintains a stable position in column equipment across the chemical and related industries. For mass transfer and separation requirements under high-temperature and highly corrosive conditions, it remains a reliable choice validated by long-term industrial practice.
