Ceramic Intalox saddle rings represent a significant advancement in random tower packing technology, evolved directly from the earlier ceramic arc saddle design. By modifying the arched surfaces to feature differing internal radii of curvature, the Intalox saddle effectively eliminates the nesting problems common to traditional saddle packings, ensuring uniform porosity distribution and significantly improved fluid distribution throughout the packed bed. Manufactured from high-quality chemical porcelain with a typical chemical composition of 70–75% SiO₂ and 19–23% Al₂O₃, these packings exhibit a softening point of 1400°C minimum and withstand repeated thermal cycling between 20°C and 820°C. They offer exceptional resistance to corrosion from a wide range of inorganic acids, organic acids, and organic solvents, with the sole exception of hydrofluoric acid.
Available in standard nominal sizes of 1″ (25 mm), 1.5″ (38 mm), 2″ (50 mm), and 3″ (76 mm), ceramic Intalox saddles deliver superior mass transfer performance through their unique geometry. For the 25 mm size, key parameters include a surface area of 250 m²/m³, void fraction of 74%, bulk density of approximately 700 kg/m³, and a packing factor of 320 m⁻¹. The 50 mm size offers a surface area of 120 m²/m³ with 77% void space and a bulk density of 510 kg/m³. Compared to ceramic Raschig rings of equivalent size, Intalox saddles provide approximately 25% greater specific surface area and lower hydraulic resistance, resulting in greater capacity, reduced pressure drop, and enhanced gas-liquid contact efficiency. These characteristics make them the most widely used bulk packing in chemical, metallurgical, and coking industry applications, including drying towers, absorption towers, cooling towers, scrubbing towers, stripping columns, distillation columns, and heat exchangers.
