High alumina ceramic packing balls are spherical industrial media manufactured from alpha-alumina (α-Al₂O₃) with low silica content. They are classified by alumina (Al₂O₃) content into 90-series (≥90%), 92-series (≥92%), 95-series (≥95%), and 99-series (≥99%). These products serve as catalyst bed support and covering materials, as well as tower packings, in reactors and packed columns across the petroleum, chemical, fertilizer, natural gas, and environmental protection industries. Their primary functions include buffering the impact of incoming liquid and gas streams on catalysts, protecting vulnerable catalyst beds, and improving fluid distribution within the reactor.

Key performance parameters vary by grade. For the 92-series, typical specifications include Al₂O₃ ≥92%, Fe₂O₃ ≤0.25%, water absorption ≤6%, and bulk density ≥3.0 g/cm³. The 95-series offers Al₂O₃ ≥95%, Fe₂O₃ ≤0.15%, water absorption ≤5%, and bulk density ≥3.1 g/cm³. Crush strength is diameter-dependent: a 3 mm (1/8") ball exceeds 203 kg (2,000 N); 6 mm (1/4") exceeds 459 kg (4,500 N); 13 mm (1/2") exceeds 877 kg (8,600 N); and 76 mm (3") exceeds 4,790 kg (47,000 N). These products exhibit high mechanical strength, resistance to high temperatures and pressures, strong acid and alkali corrosion resistance, excellent thermal shock stability, and low chemical activity. Maximum operating temperatures can reach up to 1,650°C depending on grade.

Applications span multiple industrial sectors. In petrochemical refining, these balls are used in catalytic reforming, hydrogenation, and isomerization units. In fertilizer production, they serve in ammonia synthesis and methanol converters. They are also employed in natural gas drying adsorbers, coal chemical shift converters, and sulfuric acid production converters. The chemical inertness of high alumina ceramic packing balls prevents the leaching of silica that could foul downstream equipment or poison catalyst carriers.
