A Guide to Selecting Plastic Tower Packings

Plastic tower packings are core components in mass transfer equipment, widely used in chemical and environmental industries. Their primary function is to create efficient contact area between gas and liquid phases to enhance mass and heat transfer. Compared to metal or ceramic alternatives, plastic packings (such as PP, PE, and PVDF) offer advantages including light weight, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness. This guide outlines the characteristics and applications of four common types: Pall Rings, Cascade mini Rings, Polyhedral Hollow Ball and Heilex Rings.

Pall Rings feature windows and inward-directed tabs in their walls. This design optimizes gas paths and improves liquid distribution, providing a high specific surface area while significantly reducing pressure drop. Cascade mini Rings are an improved version of Pall Rings. Their height is typically only half their diameter, and they include a conical flange. This structure further minimizes gas flow resistance, achieving a pressure drop 20-30% lower than comparable Pall Rings and offering greater operational flexibility. Polyhedral Hollow Ball consist of two hemispheres with multiple fan-shaped blades. Their spherical shape ensures uniform packing and open pathways, resulting in very low pressure drop and high voidage. This makes them particularly suitable for high-flow gas scrubbing, cooling, and processes involving dust-laden streams. Heilex Rings is an open, grid-like packing that combines advantages of ring and saddle types. Its three-dimensional symmetrical grid creates numerous liquid redistribution points, features very high open area, and demonstrates strong anti-clogging capability. It is especially suited for demanding applications with high liquid loads, high viscosity, or fouling tendencies.

Selecting the right packing requires comprehensive consideration of process conditions, fluid properties, and cost. Pall Rings and Cascade mini Rings are versatile for most distillation and absorption duties. Polyhedral Hollow Ball excel in high-capacity gas treatment, while Heilex Rings performs best in high liquid load and fouling-prone systems. Correct selection is crucial for the efficient and stable operation of the column.
