Plastic tower packing is a tower internal filling component manufactured from heat-resistant and chemically corrosion-resistant materials including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), reinforced polypropylene (RPP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This type of packing features high void ratio, low pressure drop, low mass-transfer unit height, high flooding point, and sufficient gas-liquid contact. Compared with metal and ceramic packings, plastic packings are lighter in weight, more impact-resistant, more cost-effective, and less prone to breakage. The long-term operating temperature ranges from 60°C to 150°C depending on the material selected.
Three typical plastic packing types include Pall rings, Cascade Mini Rings, and Intalox saddle rings. Pall rings are modified from Raschig rings with two rows of rectangular windows and inward-bent tongues, increasing gas-liquid flow passages and offering high capacity, low resistance, and high separation efficiency for absorption, scrubbing, and stripping towers. Cascade Mini Rings have a height-to-diameter ratio about half that of Pall rings and a conical flange at one end, reducing gas resistance, increasing capacity, and improving void fraction through point-contact patterns, and are commonly used in decarbonization, desulfurization, and separation towers. Intalox saddle rings replace curved surfaces with rectangular faces to eliminate nesting, ensuring uniform bed void fraction and better liquid distribution, with low pressure drop and mass-transfer unit height, and are primarily applied in absorption towers, tail-gas towers, and dechlorination towers.
Plastic tower packings are widely used in packed towers across the petroleum, chemical, chlor-alkali, gas, and environmental protection industries, serving unit operations including absorption, desorption, distillation, extraction, and scrubbing. Material selection should be based on operating temperature, corrosivity, and mechanical strength requirements: PE for service below 100°C, PP at approximately 100°C, RPP at approximately 120°C, PVC at approximately 60°C, CPVC at approximately 100°C, and PVDF up to 150°C. With their corrosion resistance, light weight, cost-effectiveness, and ease of handling, plastic packings have become the preferred tower internals for low-to-moderate temperature corrosive services.
