Ceramic Saddle Ring is a type of random packing widely used in chemical mass transfer and environmental treatment. Its name derives from a geometric design that combines the characteristics of ring and saddle shapes to optimize gas-liquid distribution within towers. The manufacturing and acceptance of this product in China comply with National Standard GB/T 18749-2008 ("Specification for Chemical-Resistant Ceramic Tower Packings"), while its material properties also reference the provisions of ASTM C515 regarding chemical resistance and physical indices of ceramic packings . Common nominal sizes range from 16mm (5/8 inch) to 76mm (3 inches) to suit industrial units of varying scales .

This packing is formed using a continuous extrusion process. Its unique curved channel design results in a bed void fraction of 68% to 80% . This structure significantly reduces the resistance to gas flow through the packing layer and effectively decreases the radial diffusion coefficient of the descending liquid, thereby minimizing the occurrence of wall flow . Compared to traditional Raschig Rings, Ceramic Saddle Rings offer greater capacity under the same pressure drop and higher mass transfer efficiency. They are also less prone to interlocking and nesting, ensuring long-term operational stability and uniformity of the packed bed .

The primary material of the ceramic saddle ring is high-alumina bauxite, sintered at high temperatures to form an inert ceramic body. It exhibits excellent chemical stability, with acid resistance (especially in inorganic acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric acid) reaching over 99.8% , and can withstand operating temperatures exceeding 1000°C. Its only chemical application limitation is that it cannot resist corrosion from hydrofluoric acid (HF) . Physically, its bulk density typically ranges from 530 kg/m³ to 780 kg/m³ depending on the size, while the specific surface area covers a broad spectrum from 81 m²/m³ to 647 m²/m³ , allowing users to select the optimal specification based on mass transfer requirements and column load .

In industrial practice, ceramic saddle rings are primarily packed in equipment such as drying towers, absorption towers, scrubbers, and cooling towers for off-gas treatment and material separation in industries like chlor-alkali, sulfuric acid, metallurgy, and pharmaceuticals . Furthermore, leveraging its favorable heat capacity and thermal stability, this packing has been widely adopted as heat storage media in Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO). When treating low-concentration Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from industries such as petrochemicals, painting, and printing, it achieves efficient heat recovery and purification .
