In the field of chemical engineering, packing usually refers to inert solid materials used in packed towers, such as pall rings and Raschig rings. The function of these packings is to increase the contact area between gas and liquid, thereby promoting strong mixing between the two. In addition, in chemical products, packing is also called chemical filling, which is mainly used to improve processing performance, enhance the mechanical properties of products, and may help reduce costs. In sewage treatment, packing is widely used in contact oxidation processes because microorganisms can accumulate on its surface, thereby increasing the contact area with sewage and achieving effective degradation of sewage.
The advantages of packing include simple structure, reduced pressure, and easy to manufacture with corrosion-resistant non-metallic materials. This makes packing perform well in operations such as gas absorption, vacuum distillation, and handling corrosive fluids. However, packing also has some shortcomings, such as uneven gas-liquid distribution and poor contact when the tower neck is enlarged, which affects efficiency. In addition, the packed tower itself faces challenges such as heavy weight, high cost, difficulty in cleaning and maintenance, and large packing loss.
When selecting tower packing, it is necessary to comprehensively consider its geometric characteristic data, such as specific surface area, porosity, and packing factor. These data are crucial for evaluating the performance of packing. Specifically, the larger the specific surface area, the larger the gas-liquid mass transfer area provided; the higher the porosity, the stronger the gas passing capacity and the lower the pressure drop; and the packing factor reflects the fluid mechanics properties of the packing, and the smaller its value means the smaller the flow resistance. At the same time, the performance of the packing is mainly reflected in whether it can provide a larger specific surface area, ensure the uniform distribution of liquid on the surface of the packing, achieve uniform distribution of airflow in the packing layer, and have a larger porosity.
Chemshun Ceramics recommends that in the process of selecting packing, it is necessary to comprehensively consider multiple factors such as the type, specification and material of the packing to ensure that the selected packing can not only meet the strict requirements of the production process, but also effectively reduce equipment investment and operating costs.
